Valiant Knight

Valiant Knight is a retro-style action platformer where players battle monsters and bosses to earn new abilities and high scores. It was developed by myself using both premade and created assets.

The Design Process

I created this game as part of my final school work. The gameplay design was heavily inspired by titles like Castlevania and Metroid while attempting to showcase my ability to create a cohesive and entertaining interactive experience for the player from concept to delivery.

I started with the concept, something complex in design but simple enough in implementation that I could achieve my goals on my own while both taking classes and working full time. I landed on a MetroidVania style platformer since it offered an engaging user experience while still being reasonable for one person to develop.

I then created a Concept Document and Game Design Document for Valiant Knight, both of which can be found in the links below. Although I was working alone, I documented the design as if I was working with a team and by the end of development I nearly had it memorized.

With the gameplay and level design complete I began with the development. Using Unity's tilemap system I was able to quickly layout the level designs I had created. My wife helped design the player character and enemies, which were then imported and finished in GIMP. All of the game's interactions were developed using C# scripts in Unity.

Finally, with the game development finished and classes wrapping up, I decided to push forward in releasing my game on Steam. While I don't think it's going to be topping the charts I thought it would be beneficial to gain that experience and get valuable feedback from other players.

Until the game is fully published on steam, you can find the most recent build at the link below.
